EP Packs European Health Insurance Card

With the holiday season almost upon us, Elspeth Attwooll MEP is reminding Scots to pack their European Health Insurance Card when travelling throughout the European Union.

May ended with the Fisheries Committee visit to the north of Norway. It was effectively light for twenty four hours, although clouds meant that we did not actually see any midnight sun. We did, though, have a very useful visit, learning about their efforts to combat illegal fishing and the operation of their ban on discarding fish.

May started off travelling to the North East of Scotland, to meet with some councillors in Aberdeen, have talks about conservation policy and visit a grouse moor in Aberdeenshire, stay overnight with a friend in Fraserburgh and go to farmers' markets in Ellon and Huntly, before getting the train back down to Glasgow.

April started off in Brussels with a Committee week (Fisheries and Regional Development), several Canadian visitors (whether the EU should ban the import of seal products is a big issue at the moment) and a discussion about the upcoming "Telecoms" package.

March was a month in which travel played an even larger role than usual, not always for the best of reasons. It started off with group meetings in Brussels, followed by a trip north, taking in Tain, Dornoch, Invergordon and Dingwall and including visits to a school, a fishmeal factory, a distillery, a port services company and a hen sale. So far, so very good in terms of interest, usefulness and all going according to plan.

The first day of February saw the annual meeting in Dunblane between Scots MEPs and representatives of Scottish churches and aid organisations. There was a lively discussion, ranging from the Reform Treaty through various aspects of foreign affairs to the EU's involvement in development aid.

As a working month, January went past very quickly, partly because we didn't start back until the 7th and partly because there were so many different things happening after that.

2007 was certainly eventful for the European Parliament, through from the entry of Bulgaria and Romania in January to the signing of both the Charter of Fundamental Rights and the Lisbon Treaty in December.

They say that, the older you get, the quicker time passes. But I didn't altogether expect November to have disappeared in a flash. Hopefully, it is only because so much has been happening.

"People often believe that what we do in Brussels is somehow remote from life in Scotland. Yet, when I think that, in the course of just one week in October, we had people out to see us from Shetland Islands Council, Scottish Borders Enterprise, the Europa Institute at Edinburgh University and Inclusion Scotland - all with issues directly affecting their activities here are home - I realise just how far this is from the truth.

Come the last week in August we are back "in harness" after our summer break. For me this has meant a Fisheries Committee, with a discussion on ways of reducing by-catch as one of the major items, my Group's preparation for the upcoming Strasbourg session and, back home in Scotland, meeting up with members of the Scottish Parliament's European and External Relations Committee, seeing some constituents and working through a deal of casework.

The first weekend in June saw me in Orkney. Then- come the Monday- it was off to Brussels for meetings if the Fisheries and Regional Development Committees, as well as a mini-session of the full Parliament.

February is, of course, the shortest month but this year it flew by even more quickly than usual. It began with the second day of a full Parliament meeting in Brussels, followed by a joint meeting between MEPs and representatives of Scottish churches in Dunblane.

The first full week of December started with a conference on maritime policy organised by the Scottish Parliament. After this it was off to Brussels to prepare for the Strasbourg session to follow. But the week also included two events connected with volunteering - a seminar in the Parliament and a visit to Volunteer Development Scotland in Stirling.

Usually, at this time of year, with August being our holiday month, I am reporting back on travel to other and mostly southern parts of Europe. For various family reasons ? including the visit of a cousin of my husband?s from Australia ? we decided to stay in Scotland instead.

July sees the G8 summit and the beginning of the six-month UK Presidency of the EU. I am glad that the government made two of its priorities the same - poverty relief and climate change. Removing the burden of debt on the developing world is of major importance. But "making poverty history" also means giving it free and fair access to the world's markets.

They say time goes faster as you get older but, even so, I find it difficult to believe that it is a whole month since I sat down to write this column. Perhaps, though, it is because so much has happened since.
